Quick Attic Insulation Fixes

When a well-insulated attic is properly completed, it significantly reduces heating and cooling costs and helps keep your home more comfortable. But, many homes suffer from under-insulated attics that can cost you dearly in both energy bills and indoor air quality. The good news is that it’s usually a relatively simple project to upgrade attic insulation, and the benefits are immediate and dramatic.

The most commercial insulation and cheapest type of attic insulation is fiberglass batts that are pre-cut to fit between standard joists. These can be installed by a novice with minimal difficulty and are readily available at local hardware stores. However, they can leave gaps and compression that significantly diminish their effectiveness. If you choose this option, be sure to wear a mask and use gloves to prevent inhaling fiberglass dust. A more labor-intensive but effective upgrade is to install a radiant barrier foil. Staple the foil shiny-side down to the underside of the attic joists, maintaining a 1-2″ air gap. This will effectively reflect and deflect radiant heat from the roof and keep attics cool, thereby reducing the load on your air conditioning system.

Attic Energy Optimization Ideas

In cold climates, R-values of up to R-49 or more are recommended for maximum energy savings. This can be achieved with blown or rolled fiberglass and other types of insulation, but the most efficient solution is spray foam insulation, which provides superior air sealing and high R-values for long-term energy savings. Before you add new insulation, be sure to fix any roof leaks and ensure that all exhaust fans are redirected outside. Exhaust venting into the attic introduces humid air that can destroy insulation and promote mold growth. Also, make sure that light fixtures are rated safe to be in contact with insulation (ie IC-rated).
